Can a Bad Fuel Pump Cause a Car to Stall During Acceleration?

A bad Fuel Pump can definitely cause a car to stall upon acceleration. The main function of the Fuel Pump is to transfer fuel from the tank to the engine with the correct pressure. If it starts malfunctioning, then it would result in erratic fuel flow or even complete starvation of fuel to the engine, especially under high demand situations like acceleration. This may cause it to stall since the engine will lose the power it needs to keep up the speed. For example, in high-performance cars, it would mean a worn-out fuel pump much faster due to high demands for fuel at fast acceleration. Recent reports also show that the newer versions of electronic fuel injection (EFI) systems in vehicles are more prone to issues of the Fuel Pump than the previous models. In such a system, the engine becomes quite dependent on precise delivery and regulation of pressure of fuel. When the Fuel Pump fails, the engine stutters and may stall since the fuel injection system can no longer support the correct air-fuel mixture, particularly when extra fuel is required for acceleration. For example, in a 2018 study by the Automotive Maintenance and Repair Association (AMRA), nearly 15% of all stalling incidents in vehicles equipped with EFI were traced back to faulty Fuel Pumps. This percentage is notably higher compared to older carbureted systems, which have different mechanisms for fuel delivery. The study emphasizes that faulty Fuel Pumps are one of the most common causes of unexpected stalls during acceleration, particularly in vehicles with higher fuel demands. It is, therefore, important that when a car starts stalling during acceleration, the condition of the Fuel Pump be considered as part of the diagnosis. This way, early detection and replacement of a failing Fuel Pump will help avoid further engine damage and allow the proper restoration of vehicle performance.
