The Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City, MO, just acquired the large c-print "Cupola" for their permanent collection and will exhibit Raissa Venables' work in the summer of 2010.

The photographs of this New York based artist portray distorted rooms of intoxicating color. In her skillfully composed photographs, she transforms a myriad of traditionally taken photos of one space into an altered interior by manually assembling digital collages to replace what we know with a new perspective. The result is a new print that contains a record of the history of this place with the effect that we feel the soul of the room or of the persons living there. Her photographs tell the story of their inhabitants' deeds, dreams and nightmares. Without showing us any people, Venables shows us their traces. The cubistic structure and expressionistic colors in her work integrate the classic modern stylistics in contemporary photography.
