CONTEMPORARY REPRESENTATIONAL ART

Craig Cully

Biography

Craig M. Cully
Craig Cully began his art career with controversy when his installation “My Sunday Mourning” was banned from Sun Valley High School in Aston Pennsylvania in 1988. He quickly became aware of the possibility of art not only to engage but also to enrage. Perhaps a little leery of such power and criticism Cully decided to study Graphic Design at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. It was during an exchange with The Cooper Union in New York City where Cully realized that the design realm embraced too many rules and not enough room for self expression. He quickly returned to his first love of painting and portraiture, graduating with a BFA from Tyler in 1993.
Cully would continue painting the next few years and study briefly at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He then entered the MFA program at the University of Arizona where he received his painting MFA in 1999 while acquiring awards for teaching and
accolades for his thesis work “SUBJECT self ” – a near sold out show.
Cully continues to produce gorgeous portrait paintings with self-authored narratives, explore the awkward intimacies of personal relationships and human emotions. Cully has recently expanded his oeuvre to include still life subjects rendered with intimate care and attention to the unique beauty of each subject.
Teaching is also an avenue Cully continues to explore, being committed to the power of the visual image and the necessity for art making to be embraced and respected. He lives and works part time in both Tucson, AZ and Menomonie, WI with his wife and
two bloodhounds.
